PRO FOOTBALL : Gregg Goes the Wright Way and Packers Win, 23-3

After starter Don Majowski completed only 2 of 11 passes in the first half, Randy Wright came in and threw two third-quarter touchdown passes to Frankie Neal to help the Green Bay Packers beat Kansas City, 23-3, Sunday.

It was the ninth straight loss for the Chiefs, who have not won since an opening-day victory over San Diego. The Chiefs’ offense has gone 13 quarters without scoring a touchdown.

The Packers were struggling, too, until Coach Forrest Gregg decided to call on Wright, who came in despite a tender ankle.

“When you’ve got to win, you’ve got to put the starter in,” Gregg said. “That’s what I felt we had to do to win. His ankle bothers him. We knew that going in and we hoped we wouldn’t have to play him.”

Wright, who ended up completing 7 of 15 passes for 91 yards, was injured against Seattle the previous Sunday.

“I can’t push off the ankle,” he said. “That’s why my passes were going high, because you’re sitting back on your heels. I felt I could have started but we didn’t want to try to do something to make it worse. It hurts to run on it.”

Sunday was Kansas City Coach Frank Gansz’s 49th birthday. “I do feel a little bit older today,” said the Chiefs’ first-year coach.

“I’m not ready to throw it in. I know it’s disappointing, but I really feel we’re a much better team. I give the Packers credit. They did a nice job, but we still should have been able to execute our offense.”

Frank Seurer, the Chiefs’ rookie quarterback who was a star at Edison High School in Huntington Beach, took the blame for several of the Packers’ five sacks. “I should have gotten rid of the ball,” he said. “Still, mentally, I feel like I played much better today.”

Wright threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Neal following a missed Kansas City field goal in the third period and added a 26-yard scoring pass to the rookie wide receiver 55 seconds later after the Chiefs fumbled the kickoff.

The Packers (4-5-1) snapped a three-game losing streak as the Chiefs, with the NFL’s worst record, extended their franchise-record losing streak.
