The national college football championship, United Press International version, will be determined in the Orange Bowl if Miami defeats Notre Dame Saturday and South Carolina Dec. 5.
Oklahoma (11-0) not only won the Big Eight championship and an automatic Orange Bowl bid by beating Nebraska, 17-7, Saturday, but regained first place in the UPI coaches’ poll, as well.
The Hurricanes (9-0) accepted an Orange Bowl invitation after beating Toledo, 24-14, then leap-frogged to second in the poll, ahead of Florida State and Syracuse, while the Cornhuskers dropped to fifth.
Orange Bowl President Larry Adams said: “We want to put a national title game together. I always hold my breath until the final whistle blows, though.”
