FBI Probes Call on Mobil Blast
Federal and local investigators are probing a telephone call from an unknown terrorist group taking responsibility for an explosion and fire at the Mobil Oil Corp. refinery in Torrance, police said today.
Sgt. Ron Traber of the Torrance Police Department said a man with a Latin accent called authorities in Tustin on Tuesday night, shortly after the fire broke out, with the message that the explosion and subsequent fire were deliberately touched off. Traber said he did not know any more about the call or the caller, which was discussed this morning at a meeting with refinery officials, FBI agents and others. Meanwhile, firefighters were predicting today that the blaze would burn itself out within a few hours.
