Alhambra : Quake Repair Standards
The City Council has strengthened requirements for repairing old buildings damaged in last month’s earthquakes.
City Manager Kevin Murphy said the new policy applies to buildings constructed before 1934. It says that repairs must use methods and materials approved under the Uniform Building Code, that masonry walls must be anchored to floors or roofs to withstand a certain amount of force and that existing parapets must be braced.
Murphy said the city has more than 500 unreinforced masonry buildings constructed before 1934, when new building standards took effect. He said the new policy will guide owners in making repairs until the city develops permanent standards for the buildings. The city estimates that the October quakes caused more than $27 million in damage.
