Vittorio Sangiacomo, founder of Sangiacomo Vineyards, died at his home on Wednesday. He was 91.

Sangiacomo, a native of Italy, came to Sonoma in the late 1920s and started to tend fruit trees, eventually becoming the largest pear grower in Sonoma County. He planted his first grapes in 1969 and converted his orchards to vineyards in the late 1970s. Sangiacomo Vineyards is currently one of the largest wine-grape growers in the area and supplies several California wineries.
