Motorcyclist Killed in Controversial Race Across the Desert
More than 1,000 vehicles roared across the Mojave Desert Saturday in the 165-mile Barstow-to-Las Vegas race, a cross-country contest that claimed the life of one motorcycle rider and had already been bitterly opposed by environmentalists.
The dead motorcyclist was not identified. Five other racers were injured, said Maureen Bodine, nursing supervisor at Barstow Community Hospital.
The field of motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles started off into the deset at 8 a.m. in chilly, dry and windless weather, heading for the casinos of Las Vegas.
