Willie Stargell, Luis Tiant, Sparky Lyle and Manny Mota head of list of 24 first-time candidates on the 1988 Hall of Fame ballot, the Baseball Writers’ Assn. of America announced.

The ballot also lists 21 holdover candidates, including Jim Bunning, Orlando Cepeda, Bobby Bonds, Maury Wills and Roger Maris.

Bunning, now a congressman from Kentucky, missed election by 21 votes last year, when Billy Williams and Catfish Hunter were selected. Cepeda was fourth in last year’s voting, 131 votes shy of election.

To gain election, a player must receive 75% of the ballots returned from more than 400 writers. A player can remain on the ballot for 15 years but must receive at least 5% of the vote each year to remain eligible. Results of the election will be announced in January.

Other first-time candidates: Stan Bahnsen, Mark Belanger, Ross Grimsley, Larry Hisle, Al Hrabosky, Grant Jackson, Randy Jones, Bill Lee, Lee May, John Mayberry, Lynn McGlothen, George Medich, John Milner, Willie Montanez, Ken Reitz, Joe Rudi, Reggie Smith, Jim Spencer, Del Unser and Rick Wise.

The other holdover candidates: Dick Allen, Ken Boyer, ElRroy Face, Curt Flood, Elston Howard, Harvey Kuenn, Don Larsen, Mickey Lolich, Bill Mazeroski, Minnie Minoso, Thurman Munson, Tony Oliva, Vada Pinson, Ron Santo, Joe Torre and Wilbur Wood.
