Doctors removed an enlarged prostate from Thomas P. (Tip) O’Neill Jr. and said he was in good condition 12 days after the former House Speaker underwent surgery for a cancerous rectal tumor. “He has the strength, character and will to overcome this second operation,” said Dr. Jerome P. Richie, chief of urology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and head of O’Neill’s surgical team. O’Neill, 74, was expected to remain in the hospital for a week to 10 days, Richie said. Richie said there was no sign of cancer in the prostate, but pathology reports were expected later in the week.
