Norwalk : Train Station Site Favored

The Norwalk City Council favors a vacant piece of railroad property next to Zimmerman Park as the site for a new Amtrak train station.

The parcel, owned by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Co., would be used if the city succeeds in convincing a county transportation committee that Norwalk is the best place to build a new stop on Amtrak’s Los Angeles-San Diego passenger route. Commerce and Pico Rivera also are competing for the station, which would be the only stop between downtown Los Angeles and Fullerton in Orange County.

The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing Wednesday concerning the site, located between Shoemaker Road and Civic Center Drive. It is surrounded primarily by residential neighborhoods. The proposal will then go back to the council for a final vote.

If built, the station would be little more than a partially covered passenger platform and an adjacent parking lot, said Ken Montgomery, city public works director.
