Neighbors Beef About 600-Pound Pig on the Loose

A stubborn, 600-pound pig kept city animal control officers scrambling for about an hour Wednesday afternoon as it ran wild through an orange grove in Lake View Terrace

“It turned out he had more control of us than we did of him,” said Lt. Robert Pena of the Department of Animal Regulation. “Six hundred pounds--he can do what he wants.”

Animal control officers began searching after residents of the 11700 block of Little Tujunga Canyon Road complained that a huge black-and-white porker was running loose.

Although “he wasn’t chasing anybody or anything like that,” Pena said, officers were concerned because pigs can be menacing and this one has three-inch tusks.

One officer finally lassoed the pig, then four officers spent almost 45 minutes trying to get it into a horse trailer. Pena said the porker is a 5-year-old that was probably being kept as a pet by someone in the rural neighborhood. It is now being held at the East Valley Animal Shelter in North Hollywood.

“It helps to break the monotony of dogs and cats,” Pena said.
