Hundreds of demonstrators shouting “Down with Union Carbide!” marched through the streets of Bhopal, India, to mark the third anniversary of a gas leak that killed more than 2,800 people. The torchlight parade ended at the closed plant of the Union Carbide Co. subsidiary that leaked methyl isocyanate gas Dec. 3, 1984. The Indian government and Union Carbide have been trying to settle the Indian damage suit against the U.S. firm, and this week India filed criminal charges against the company and its officials.
