Local News in Brief : Man Killed in Fight With Officer Identified

Los Angeles police on Thursday identified a man killed during a fight with a police officer in a Woodland Hills parking lot as Domingo Jurehue, 47, of Canoga Park.

Jurehue was shot twice in the upper front of his body and once in the back after he smashed a rum bottle over Officer Larry Capra’s head and then threatened the officer with the broken bottle, police said. Jurehue died an hour after the Wednesday shooting. Capra was treated for head injuries and released at Northridge Hospital Medical Center.

The shooting occurred in front of an Alpha Beta supermarket in the 6200 block of Topanga Canyon Boulevard after Capra and a partner stopped four men they believed were stealing from stores in the plaza.

Lt. William Hall said an investigation of the shooting was continuing and that the results will be submitted later to police administrators and a review board. He said preliminary findings are that Capra acted properly, and the shooting was justified.

“It appears he had no alternative,” Hall said. “He was hurt, and the guy was still coming at him.”

Hall said detectives had not yet put together a complete account of what happened. He said that Capra, still recovering, had not been formally questioned.

After the shooting, police searched the area and captured two of the fleeing suspects.

Police said the two men--Jose Gonzales, 29, and Adolfo Rodriguez, 26, both of Canoga Park--were arrested on suspicion of stealing from the stores and were being held in lieu of $2,500 bail each. The fourth man escaped.
