The winner of the Heisman Trophy, awarded annually by the Downtown Athletic Club of New York to the player selected as the best in college football, will be named today, and although Tim Brown, the flanker-kick return specialist from Notre Dame is the favorite, some others think they could surprise him.

“I’ve been playing well enough that I’ve attracted some attention,” said Don McPherson, Syracuse quarterback. “I’ve got some people talking.”

Brown averaged 167.55 all-purpose yards a game, and 21.7 yards a catch as a receiver. But he caught just 7 passes and had 207 total yards in consecutive losses to Penn State and Miami as the 12th-ranked Irish fell to 8-3.

McPherson led fourth-ranked Syracuse to an 11-0 record, passing for 2,341 yards and 22 touchdowns. He averaged almost 213 yards a game.

Lorenzo White, Michigan State tailback, had 1,459 yards rushing for an average of 132.6 yards a game.

Gordie Lockbaum, a two-way player from Holy Cross, averaged more than 7 catches a game and had 1,152 yards receiving on offense, and also has 13 tackles and 2 interceptions on defense.

These players, along with Pittsburgh tailback Craig Heyward, were invited to the award announcement.
