HOOSIER DOME BASKETBALL DOUBLEHEADER : Kentucky Gets Past Indiana in Overtime

Rex Chapman made a three-point shot with 1:48 left in overtime to give second-ranked Kentucky the lead for good as the Wildcats beat fifth-ranked Indiana, 82-76, Saturday in the inaugural Big Four doubleheader before a crowd of 43,601 at the Hoosier Dome.

Chapman had made just 5 of 17 shots before hitting the long jumper that gave Kentucky (3-0) a 78-76 lead.

“It was a spur-of-the-moment thing,” the sophomore guard said. “We were down one and needed to get something going. I saw Cedric (Jenkins) set a good pick for me, which I ran off.

“I let it go and it felt good when it left my hand.”

Keith Smart missed the first of a one-and-one for Indiana, and, after offsetting turnovers, the Wildcats put the game away on Richard Madison’s dunk and two free throws by Chapman.

“That last three-point shot was a big play,” Indiana Coach Bob Knight said. “We just couldn’t get on top of it from there.”

Chapman, who finished with 20 points, added two more free throws with nine seconds to play for the final margin.

“That was one of those shots when you jump up yelling ‘No, no,’ then you sit down and say ‘Good shot, Rex,’ ” Kentucky Coach Eddie Sutton said of Chapman’s three-pointer.

The overtime was forced when Indiana freshman Jay Edwards hit a shot from the baseline as the buzzer sounded to tie the game, 71-71.

Ed Davender led Kentucky with 22 points.

Calloway led Indiana with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Dean Garrett had 20 points.

Knight wasn’t happy with the play of Garrett or Smart.

“Our two best offensive players go for a combined 10 for 33,” Knight said. “I didn’t think Smart played very well.”

Garrett went 8 for 24, and Smart was 2 for 9 with 6 turnovers in just 27 minutes.

The loss was the first in 22 games in Indianapolis for Knight at Indiana.
