Hoyt Reportedly Accused of Cocaine Use

LaMarr Hoyt, 1983 American League Cy Young award winner, faces a return to prison if he is found to have violated his probation by using cocaine, the San Diego Union reported.

The newspaper said Hoyt will appear before a federal judge Thursday for a hearing to answer charges he tested positive for cocaine three times in October.

Hoyt’s attorney, Howard Frank, told United Press International he would not confirm or deny the allegations but acknowledged the 32-year-old right-hander would attend a probation hearing Thursday.

It is the first time Hoyt has been accused of using cocaine. His drug problems in 1986 involved sedatives.

Hoyt could be sent back to federal prison to serve the remainder of a one-year sentence handed out Dec. 16, 1986 after he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor drug charges.

The new allegations were contained in a report filed in San Diego Nov. 12 by federal probation officer Mark W. Fisher, the newspaper said. Fisher could not be reached for comment.
