The State : Plane Crash Fuels Warning

An aviation consultant has warned that residents living near busy Reid-Hillview Airport, a general aviation facility in San Jose, can expect more plane crashes unless the field is moved. “I’m not one to say, ‘I told you so,’ ” Maurice A. Garbell said after learning of the latest mishap at Reid-Hillview, a weekend fatal crash. “It is terribly frustrating that after years of knowing the magnitude of this problem, we still have this pitiful situation.” Garbell has been highly critical of the airport, bordered on three sides by residential neighborhoods. On Friday, he had presented Santa Clara County supervisors with his latest report, which recommended that an alternative site for the airport be found, as soon as possible. The following day, two women were killed and two men were critically injured when a single-engine plane crashed near the airport while attempting an emergency landing.
