Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo, Roman Catholic archbishop of Managua, renewed his call for a Christmas cease-fire in the war between Nicaragua’s Sandinista government and U.S.-backed Contras. “I am disturbed that we cannot find a way to halt this river of blood,” he said in a homily at La Sierrita church near Managua. Last week, Obando served as an intermediary in talks between the government and rebels, held in the Dominican Republic. No progress was reported, and President Daniel Ortega has rejected a holiday cease-fire.
