The Richard M. Nixon Presidential Library, the first presidential library without presidential papers, will be built next to the house where he was born, Yorba Linda city officials formally announced today.

In response to a question about why the city should be honoring a disgraced President, Mayor Ronald Bigonger said, “It’s our intent to preserve history, not to judge it.” The $25-million privately run library will contain a museum and millions of pages of documents, including Nixon’s vice presidential papers. Notably missing will be Nixon’s presidential materials. The government-owned 44 million pages of documents and 4,000 hours of tape-recordings sit in a Virginia warehouse while officials from the National Archives remove classified information.
