The Sun CD Collection: “Black Music Originals, Vol. 1,””Country Music Originals, Vol. 1” and “Rock & Roll Originals, Vol. 1” Charly. These are the first three installments in what may be the most ambitious repackaging project in CD history: a 26-volume series that will include--in chronological order--virtually every single ever released by Sam Phillips’ Sun Records, the legendary country and blues-oriented Memphis label that launched such rock pioneers as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison. The only tracks missing from the series will be Presley’s singles, whose rights were sold to RCA Records in 1955. The music and sound is uneven (Charly engineers had to turn to acetates or discs where no master tape was available), but the historical importance of this material is undeniable. Charly plans to release future volumes at the rate of about three every other month. There will be three more R&B;/blues volumes from Sun, four more country volumes and 16 rock volumes. ****
