South African officials are investigating “Children of Apartheid,” a CBS News documentary hosted by Walter Cronkite that aired in the United States on Saturday. A spokesman for the Department of Home Affairs, which monitors the media in South Africa, declined to give specific details, but said “various aspects of the alleged production of the documentary in South Africa are being investigated in depth.” It declined to give further details. The documentary consisted primarily of interviews with young South Africans, including the daughters of President P. W. Botha and Nelson Mandela, the jailed leader of the African National Congress. CBS News declined comment on the South African government’s investigation.
