Six people were stabbed to death near Pietermaritzburg in one of the worst eruptions of black-against-black violence in South Africa this year, police reported. The victims included a 67-year-old man who was stabbed 129 times. Police said the six were killed when blacks arriving in Deda township on buses attacked people and property, but community sources said that seven people died, and that the violence broke out after buses carrying black workers were stopped by members of the Zulu Inkatha movement. More than 200 people have died in black townships around Pietermaritzburg in a feud between the Inkatha movement and the more radical United Democratic Front. Talks aimed at ending the conflict were scheduled to resume today.
