Local News in Brief : South County : School Recall Fails in Capistrano District

Share

A petition drive seeking a recall election of five trustees of the Capistrano Unified School District fell far short of the 11,400 signatures required by Dec. 8. Leaders of the recall movement now say they will work to defeat the five in the 1988 regular election.

“We got only 3,000 signatures,” said Nancy Padberg, a member of Voters Organized for Truth in Education.

“But it didn’t bother us, because we realized it was pretty near impossible” to get the required signatures in the huge district, which stretches from San Clemente north to El Toro Road, she said.

“Now we are starting our campaign (against them) for next year’s elections. It’s ridiculous that we should have needed more than 11,000 signatures, when not one of the trustees got over 8,000 votes when elected,” Padberg said.

Targets of the movement are trustees A. Edward Westberg, E.G. (Ted) Kopp, Brian Demsey, Annette Gude and Charles Ward. Trustees Jan Overton and Paul Haseman are not affected.
