A teen-age sailor and his wife drowned late Wednesday when their car plunged into San Diego Bay just south of Laurel Street, a San Diego police spokesman said.

A Harbor Police officer and a San Diego lifeguard pulled Michael Timothy Giles, 19, and Jacqueline M. Giles, 17, from their car, which was submerged in 15 feet of water, after the officer smashed a car window with a sledge hammer. Efforts to resuscitate the couple failed.

Giles was driving south on Harbor Drive at high speed when he lost control of his car and it went over a low wall and into the bay, the spokesman said.

Giles was stationed at the Naval Training Center. The couple was from Pennsylvania.
