Masters Doubles Championship : Wimbledon Titlists Flach, Seguso Defeat Fellow Americans

Wimbledon doubles champions Ken Flach and Robert Seguso romped to their second straight-sets victory in the $200,000 Masters Doubles championship Thursday, beating fellow Americans Scott Davis and David Pate, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

After an opening-day upset, defending champions Stefan Edberg and Anders Jarryd regained course for a third consecutive title by defeating Paul Annacone and Christo Van Rensburg in three straight sets, while their first-day conquerors, Czechoslovakia’s Miloslav Mecir and Tomas Smid, won their second match in the round-robin tournament.

Edberg and Jarryd fired a warning to other title contenders with a 7-6, 6-3, 6-2 trimming of the American-South African combination in less than two hours at the Albert Hall.

The Czechs, who came from two sets down and 3-5 in the fifth to beat the Swedes, had no such similar scares as they brushed past Australians Laurie Warder and Peter Doohan, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, in 2 1/2 hours.

In the final match of the day, Spaniards Sergio Casal and Emilio Sanchez defeated Americans Gary Donnelly and Peter Fleming, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Flach and Seguso, who trounced Casal and Sanchez on opening day, played controlled, unspectacular tennis against their countrymen, dominating the match despite losing the first two games.

After that sluggish start, the Wimbledon titlists reeled off eight consecutive games to lead 2-0 in the second set.

They broke Davis again in the third game of the third set and Seguso went on to serve out for a second convincing victory.

Edberg and Jarryd, who also hold the Australian and U.S. doubles titles, swept aside opponents who failed to find their form and also were slightly hampered by the American’s ankle injury.

“The ankle was a bit sore, but it was not the cause of our downfall,” Annacone said.
