Duncan, Mickelson Top Field of 120

Pat Duncan of Rancho Santa Fe and Phil Mickelson of San Diego qualified as the two amateur entrants to the Shearson Lehman Brothers Andy Williams Open, finishing at the top of a field of 120 golfers Saturday at Torrey Pines.

Duncan will be making his second appearance as an amateur in the tournament after shooting a two-under-par 70 on the South Course. Duncan, a landscape architect, is the only amateur to make the two-round cut in the four years amateurs have been allowed to qualify for the tournament. Duncan finished 50th, nine shots behind winner Bob Tway in 1986.

Mickelson is a three-time San Diego junior player of the year and was named the junior player of the year by Golf Magazine. Mickelson, who attended University of San Diego High School, shot a 71.

Duncan and Mickelson will join 154 professional golfers for the tournament Feb. 16-21 at Torrey Pines.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Jill Bond scored 22 points to lead Northern Montana to a 75-64 victory over UC San Diego at La Jolla.

Jill Koster scored 16 points and had 15 rebounds to lead UCSD (2-5). Chris McCallum added 14 points for UCSD.

Shannon Anderson scored 14 points and Suzi Jones added 12 to lead Point Loma Nazarene to a 62-37 win over the College of Notre Dame, played at Belmont, Calif.

Point Loma (6-1) used a press in the first half to gain a 41-12 halftime lead. Chris Lee scored 19 to lead College of Notre Dame.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

United States International was 19 of 42 from the line as Oregon State routed the Gulls, 85-57, in Corvalis, Ore.

Oregon State (3-2) sent in the reserves after taking a 79-39 lead with six minutes left in the game. Guard Eric Knox led Oregon State with 19 points.

USIU (2-5) was led by a pair of San Diego players. Freshman Mahlon Williams, who played at Sweetwater High School, and sophomore Steve Smith, from Serra High School, had 10 points apiece for the Gulls.

Kelly Huston had 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead Chapman College to a 66-56 win over Point Loma Nazarene at Orange.

Point Loma (3-5) was led by center Steve Riddle’s 21 points and 10 rebounds. Jon Ekeroth and Clayton Williams added 11 points apiece for Point Loma.

Each team shot 41% from the field, but Chapman made up the difference at the free-throw line, where it made 20 of 21 shots compared to PLNC’s 11 of 18.
