The archbishop of San Salvador said he received an anonymous death threat after appealing to the government to allow Roman Catholic schools to raise their tuition fees. Msgr. Arturo Rivera Damas said during his homily at the Metropolitan Cathedral that a relative received a telephone call “with death threats against this servant.” President Jose Napoleon Duarte froze school fees at about $20 a month in 1980 as part of efforts to halt the deterioration of the national economy. The fees do not apply to public schools but are applicable to most of those operated by the Catholic church. “In troubled waters, there can be many people who will try to use blackmail,” Rivera Damas said.
