Countywide : Bus Ridership Edging Near Pre-Strike Level

Bus ridership in Orange County is rebounding after a decline apparently related to the bus driver strike of December, 1986, according to the Orange County Transit District.
The district tallied its highest one-day ridership since the strike on Nov. 10, when 107,859 passengers boarded OCTD buses, officials said.
Before the strike, ridership had been averaging nearly 110,000 boardings per day. For several months after the strike, ridership was about 102,000 to 105,000 per day.
“This is particularly good news to us, as we have been competing with lower gasoline prices,” OCTD General Manager James Reichert said.
Reichert attributed recent ridership gains to a mail campaign directed at targeted neighborhoods believed to have a high potential for using certain OCTD bus routes.
