Local News in Brief : ‘No’ to Extended Schools
Los Angeles school board members abided by a poll of parents and voted Monday not to add 14 crowded elementary schools next year to the 85 district schools already on a year-round calendar. However, the move does not mean the schools will never change to the controversial schedule.
In a separate matter, the board approved the formation of a 13-member task force to study having all 618 district schools on a year-round calendar, a matter the board approved and then backed away from in October for further discussion. Citizens interested in serving on that board must notify board members or the district superintendent in writing by Jan. 4.
A week ago, parents at the 14 schools voted 4 to 1 against the year-round change. Scattered around the district, the schools are Gulf, Fries, Nevin, Russell, Hyde Park, West Vernon, Hillcrest, Arminta, Hazeltine, Broadous, Dyer, Noble, Sharp and Langdon.
