Local News in Brief : Hyperion Plant Expansion
After receiving assurances from Los Angeles officials that they are serious about controlling foul odors from the Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant, the El Segundo City Council is scheduled to approve plans for the facility’s expansion today.
Last month, following residents’ complaints about odors, the council balked at giving the City of Los Angeles approval to build a new sedimentation tank at the plant. Because 6% of the tank will be built in El Segundo, Los Angeles must receive approval from the city before construction can begin.
The expansion will increase by 25% the primary treatment capacity of the facility, which now treats about 400 million gallons of sewage daily.
Los Angeles Deputy City Engineer Larry Lewis said the city hopes to offer incentives to contractors to accelerate work on odor-control jobs such as sealing and resealing tanks. If the work is not completed by various deadlines, the contractor will be fined and Los Angeles and El Segundo will split the money, he said.
