‘Pornography and Police Power’
So Archbishop Mahony is at it again. Together with our embarrassing county Board of Supervisors they have all linked halos in a religious crusade against X-rated videotapes.
Will this sort of thing never end? The public with its huge and ever increasing rental of these tapes has spoken. Let the people have their fun in the privacy of their own homes and get on with something important.
Not content with this latest fervid attack on “sex,” our supervisors passed a resolution asking U.S. Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III to create an anti-pornography task force in Los Angeles. This despite the total discrediting of the Meese pornography report by actual experts in the field and total public indifference. With Meese’s demonstrated inability to accomplish his tasks, I shudder to think of what foul-ups and problems he could bring to Los Angeles in the coming years. Huge sums of taxpayers’ money will be wasted in police actions and lawsuits.
As for the political Archbishop Mahony, I think his career would be better served by working for world peace and for the homeless, the disturbed, the poor, the abused, the uneducated, the sick. The opportunities to do something of real benefit in this troubled world are enormous. Why not make a meaningful contribution?
Like hypocrisy, human nature will never change--a fact these anti-pornography zealots cannot understand.
