The driver and two passengers in a Beck’s Tree Service truck were briefly trapped inside it Tuesday after brake failure caused it to crash, police said. All three were hurt, one of the passengers seriously enough to be hospitalized. Rescuers used a hydraulic device to free them.

Police said the accident occurred at 9 a.m. at Pasadena Avenue and McFadden Street when the driver swerved to avoid oncoming traffic after the brakes failed at the intersection. The truck sheered off a utility pole, flipped onto its side and continued into a tree, which crashed through the windshield, trapping the occupants.

Police did not identify the driver or his passengers. The hospitalized passenger was listed in good condition after undergoing surgery at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana for chest, abdominal and internal injuries, police said.
