An apparently homeless man found lying unconscious in a South Los Angeles doorway died Tuesday, becoming the first reported victim of Southern California’s recent cold snap, officials said.

The man, believed to be in his early 50s, was pronounced dead at California Medical Center shortly after noon, said nursing supervisor Beth Jackson. The cause of death was tentatively listed as hypothermia, or subnormal body temperature. An autopsy was scheduled.

The man, who carried no identification, was taken from a doorway in the 1100 block of East Vernon Avenue by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics after a passer-by called authorities, police said.
