Court Requires AIDS Lecture--5 People Show Up
Five people showed up to learn about AIDS during a lecture sponsored by the DeSoto County School District as part of a court-ordered program.
Dr. Mark Magenheim, head of the Sarasota County Health Department, gave a two-hour talk and slide show to nearly 300 empty chairs in a school cafeteria.
Aside from school administrators, reporters and the school’s janitor, five people attended.
The school board hired Magenheim to meet a federal court order to educate residents about AIDS following the controversy over three AIDS-exposed hemophiliac brothers barred from classes.
The boys’ parents sued, and the judge returned the boys to class.
But after school boycotts, bomb threats and an arson fire that destroyed their home, the family fled Arcadia for Sarasota.
