One of the last living pupils of Austrian composer Alban Berg has received permission to travel from Moscow to Vienna after a seven-year wait, the Austrian embassy in Moscow said Wednesday. Soviet musicologist Philip Gershkowitz, 82, is scheduled to leave Moscow today for the Berg Foundation in Vienna, where he has been invited to spend six months. Gershkowitz earlier had sought permission to emigrate to Israel. Berg lived from 1885 to 1935 and is regarded as one of the most important composers of 12-tone music. He combined traditional Viennese lyric and dramatic qualities with the atonal system.
