Lynwood : Ceremony Moved Indoors
Stormy weather Wednesday forced Lynwood officials inside but did not prevent them from holding a ground-breaking ceremony for a proposed $1-million project to renovate the city’s 40-year-old community center.
The Lynwood High School 70-member marching band performed, and Mayor Paul Richards and other officials spoke during the ceremony in the gym at the center. The Recreation and Parks Department provided several wheelbarrow loads of dirt and some trees anchored in buckets for the affair.
The community center will be rehabilitated to include a transit center for the city trolley system and the Southern California Rapid Transit District.
An architectural design for the new center is to be prepared by early next year.
To pay for the remodeling work, the city is using $570,000 of Proposition A funds, the half-cent county sales tax for transit projects. The remaining funds will come from a federal block grant.
