Ted McCabe, attorney for Catholic Charities of Orange County, announced that he is leaving the organization after this week.

McCabe, 33, has been the group’s counsel since 1985 and helped form the county’s most extensive legalization program under the new immigration law. So far, about 3,000 illegal aliens have filed for amnesty under that law.

McCabe said he would begin a two-week vacation Monday before choosing among job offers from both private firms and advocacy groups.

Father Jaime Soto, director of Catholic Charities in Orange County, said McCabe “put in a very dedicated kind of service here, . . . and we’re grateful for the time he’s done.”

Soto said the Community Law Center would provide legal services for the group until a new staff counsel could be hired.
