Reagan Lauds New Secretary of Labor as She Takes Office

Ann Dore McLaughlin, promising efforts to smooth the transition to “a continuing competitive and productive future,” was sworn in Thursday as secretary of labor.

With President Reagan at her side, McLaughlin took the oath of office from Judge Gerard Riley as her left hand rested on a Bible held by her husband, conservative commentator John McLaughlin.

Reagan lauded his new labor secretary for her “special competence” and a “passionate sense of commitment.”

“Ann,” he said, “you must ensure that the work force of the future is ready and willing to keep America the most productive and innovative nation on Earth.”

McLaughlin ticked off a list of priorities that included guaranteeing safe conditions, affordable child care, secure pensions, equitable wages and benefits and educational and training opportunities for American workers.

“My responsibility to you and to the millions of American workers is to prepare them and us for tomorrow,” she told Reagan. “The Labor Department’s role is to ensure the transition to a continuing competitive and productive future.”
