20 Injured as 5.8 Temblor Jiggles Bali

A strong earthquake jolted Indonesia’s tourist island of Bali today, injuring 20 people but causing no serious damage, the weather office said.

Minor quakes also hit Taiwan and central Japan today, but no injuries were reported in either place.

The Indonesian weather office said the quake measured 5.8 on the Richter scale. The early morning temblor was centered in the Indian Ocean, 125 miles south of the Bali capital of Denpasar.

About 20 people suffered slight injuries, officials said .

In Taiwan, an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale shook the southern part of the island, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, the Central Weather Bureau reported.

The bureau said the quake was recorded shortly before 2 p.m.
