The city’s long-awaited beach path for bicyclists and pedestrians will be dedicated Jan. 9 with a day of special events and a gala ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The three-mile trail from 54th Place to Alamitos Avenue completes a 65-mile loop in the San Gabriel and Los Angeles River Bike Ways. On the west it connects the Marina and Shoreline Aquatic Park Bike Trail, an extension of the Los Angeles River trail. On the east it extends into the proposed street path that joins the San Gabriel River Bicycle Trail.

Opening-day festivities will include a 10-K Run, a bicycle parade and bike safety rodeo. Other activities during the 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. celebration are a licensing event sponsored by the Long Beach Police Department, food booths, games and free swim passes to Belmont Plaza Pool. A daytime fireworks display courtesy of Wrather Port Properties, Ltd., will provide a backdrop to the noon ribbon-cutting, which will involve members of the City Council and city agencies.
