NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Two more workers in Santa Claus caps were suspended Sunday by their company as union leaders prepared to escalate their holiday week battle with a protest today, a union official said.
Twenty-seven workers at the Okonite Cable Co. have been suspended since last Thursday, when two workers who had been wearing the red and white caps were disciplined by company officials.
Dozens of employees responded by wearing similar Santa caps to work in a show of protest, said William Miller, recording secretary of Local 1992 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Miller said he expects a showdown today, when the union has asked all 200 of its members at Okonite to show up wearing Santa caps.
