World chess champion Gary Kasparov, having successfully defended his title in Seville, Spain, accused the International Chess Federation of being a “dictatorship” that is damaging the level of championship play by attempting to set up title matches every year. “We will now discover a lot of people hate the (present) system” of international competition, he said, noting that he has helped to create a rival organization to counter the federation’s influence. As for his own victory in a 24-game match with challenger Anatoly Karpov, the champion said, “I had to fight not only for the title, but for the end of the dictatorship in the chess world.”
