California has 57 of the nation’s 190 top import vehicle franchises, Automotive News reported. New Jersey and Texas follow with 19 dealerships each. Virginia, New York and Florida had 13 each. The top six franchisers in the country, in terms of new car sales, are Toyota dealerships. Longo Toyota, in El Monte, topped the list, selling 18,334 new cars in 1986. The dealership’s total sales came to $228 million that year. Six of the top 10 Toyota dealerships are in California, as are the top Honda, BMW, Mazda and Mercedes-Benz dealers.
