Local News in Brief : Hearing Set for Lawsuit
A Los Angeles Superior Court hearing has been set for Jan. 12 on a lawsuit that seeks to force the Lawndale City Council to put the exact language of an initiative measure on the April 12 ballot.
The measure, which qualified for the ballot with more than the necessary 841 signatures, would require voter approval for public development and redevelopment projects costing more than $1 million.
The council voted 3 to 2 not to put the petition’s wording on the ballot because City Atty. David J. Aleshire said it is “unclear” and “misleading.” At the request of the council, he has drafted alternative wording.
A. D. (Jack) Allen, who filed the suit on behalf of Lawndale resident Nancy J. Marthens, said the local measure is “a model of clarity” compared to Proposition 13, the powerful property tax-limitation measure approved by California voters in 1978.
Allen said he and city officials are holding discussions to try to reach an out-of-court agreement on the wording.
