Local News in Brief : Library Named for Durants

Share

A Los Angeles Public Library was renamed the Will and Ariel Durant Branch by the Board of Library Commissioners.

The husband-wife team wrote the 11-volume series “The Story of Civilization” and Will Durant was the author of “The Story of Philosophy,” which has been printed in 12 languages. Both died in 1981, Will at 96, Ariel at 83.

Board members said that by renaming the branch, they would also eliminate confusion with a Los Angeles County Public Library branch located in the incorporated city of West Hollywood.

The Will and Ariel Durant Branch is located at 1403 N. Gardner St., Hollywood, but despite its location, it was known as the West Hollywood Branch of the library.
