This country has banned the hunting of reindeer, but the new law won’t be effective until after Christmas.

Responding to a public outcry about reindeer hunts being used to promote tourism in Lapland, the government quickly moved to enact a law to prohibit the sport, officials said Thursday. The law takes effect in 1988.

Finns protested earlier in December when they saw television film of reindeer being slaughtered after having been shot in hunts organized for tourists by Lapland herders.

“Can you imagine anyone wanting to shoot Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer?” said a Finnish Tourist Board official, horrified by the plan to attract tourists.
