College Basketball Roundup : Stanford Hands Santa Barbara First Loss

Todd Lichti of Stanford made all 18 of his free throws and scored 30 points as Stanford defeated previously unbeaten UC Santa Barbara, 75-65, Monday night in the first round of the Hoosier tournament in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Cardinal will meet 13th-ranked Indiana tonight for the title. Junior Brian Sloan, in only his third collegiate start, scored 14 points in leading Indiana past Penn, 94-54.

Stanford was down, 50-38, with 14:05 to play, and took its first lead of the night at 57-56 on Howard Wright’s bank shot with 7:26 remaining. The teams then exchanged one-point leads until Santa Barbara’s Mike Doyle’s free throw tied the game, 61-61.

Stanford (9-2) took a 63-61 advantage on a Wright turnaround with 4:21 left and opened a 67-61 lead on a layin by Lichti, followed by his two free throws with 2:25 remaining.

Lichti made eight free throws in the final three minutes to wrap up the victory. He 18 points in the second half.

Darrick Dehart led Santa Barbara scorers with 16 points, but only four came in the second half. Brian Johnson had 14 for the Gauchos (7-1).

For Indiana (7-2), four Hoosiers finished in double figures with Joe Hillman scoring 14 and freshman Lyndon Jones adding 11. Phil Pitts topped the Ivy League team with 22 points. Penn is 1-6.

Sloan, the son of former National Basktball Assn. star Jerry Sloan, had scored only 55 points in 40 college games. His best previous production was 6 points in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. tournament last March against Fairfield.

Michigan 93, Clemson 88--Gary Grant sparked Michigan with a pair of steals leading to two baskets, and the 12th-ranked Wolverines pulled away from Clemson in the final four minutes in the first round of the South Florida Invitational at Tampa.

The victory was the ninth straight for Michigan, which improved to 10-1. The Wolverines will play South Florida, an 87-67 opening-round winner over Florida International, for the championship tonight.

Grant finished with 26 points. Glen Rice scored 23 and Terry Mills had 17 for Michigan, which blew a 10-point halftime lead and fell behind by four before coming back.

Clemson (6-2) was led by Elden Campbell’s 25 points. Jerry Pryor scored 20 points, and Grayson Marshall contributed 15 for the Tigers.

Kansas 64, Memphis State 62--There were as many reasons as missed shots when the 17th-ranked Jayhawks beat the 19th-ranked Tigers in the opening round of the ECAC Holiday Festival at New York.

Kansas won its seventh straight game despite shooting 38% from the field but that was considerably better than Memphis State’s 29% effort.

Danny Manning scored 19 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Jayhawks (8-2). However, Coach Larry Brown wasn’t happy with the effort.

“I don’t think Danny worked that hard on the offensive end to get the ball,” Brown said. “When our kids have a bad shooting night it puts the pressure on Danny.”

Kansas didn’t secure the victory until Pritchard, who made 3 of 12 from the field, made two free throws with 15 seconds to play for a 64-59 lead. Memphis State is 6-2.

Three-time and defending festival champion St. John’s (7-1) defeated Marist, 66-59, in the other game and will meet Kansas tonight. Jayson Williams scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half as the Redmen took a 33-23 lead halftime lead, and Marist (4-2) came no closer eight points until the final two minutes of the game.

Temple 70, Mississippi 61--Tim Perry scored 20 points and Marc Macon had 17 to lead the sixth-ranked Owls in the opening game of the Sugar Bowl tournament.

Temple will play Southern University (6-3), which defeated New Orleans, 114-101.

Temple (5-0) led the deliberately played game, 43-39, with 11:40 left. Perry had eight points and Macon six over the next six minutes as Temple took a 58-48 lead.

Mississippi (5-3) went to a full-court press with 2:16 left in the game and Temple ahead 60-51. The Owls’ Howard Evans had no trouble with the pressure, and the Rebels had to foul to get the ball. Macon, Perry and Howard Evans made a pair of free throws each down the stretch as Temple maintained the lead.

Pittsburgh 72, Florida State 71--Rod Brookin scored 18 points to lead the No. 3 Panthers over the upset-minded Seminoles in the Citrus Bowl tournament at Orlando, Fla.

The victory puts the Panthers (6-0) into the tournament’s championship game against Alabama, a 65-54 winner over Central Florida in the opening game.

Brookin’s scoring included the last Pitt basket with two minutes remaining giving the Panthers a 72-67 lead.

Northern Iowa 90, Louisiana State 80--James Parker scored 35 points to lead the Panthers to the upset at Las Vegas.

LSU took a 12-4 lead in the opening five minutes of the game, but the Panthers then scored 10 straight points. After the Tigers tied the game, 14-14, Northern Iowa (5-4) went ahead for good on a three-point field goal by Nick Nurse. LSU (3-3) was led by Ricky Blanton with 30 points and 10 rebounds.

Syracuse 110, Morehead St. 69--Sherman Douglas became the 29th Orangeman to score 1,000 points in his career as he hit a season-high 29 points, including 17 in the first half, as No. 7 Syracuse routed Morehead State. The junior guard has 1,009 points.

The Orangemen won their seventh game in a row and improved to 9-2. Morehead State is 4-5.

Vanderbilt 99, Eastern Carolina 63--Charles Mayes scored 17 points to lead five Commodores in double figures, in the Music City Invitational at Nashville, Tenn.

Vanderbilt meets Cornell, a 77-71 winner over Miami of Ohio, in tonight’s championship game.

Mayes sank three consecutive jumpers, one from three-point range, early in the second half as Vanderbilt (6-1) increased its 46-40 halftime lead to 55-42. Eastern Carolina is 2-5.

Maryland 82, South Carolina 77--Tony Massenburg, a 6-9 sophomore forward-center playing his first game this season after sitting out because of academic problems, scored 25 points to lead the Terrapins at College Park, Md.

Brian Williams and Dave Dickerson each added 14 points for the Terrapins (6-2). South Carolina, led by Darryl Martin with 16 points, fell to 5-2.

Missouri 85, San Jose State 61--Gary Leonard scored a team-high 16 points to lead the 19th-ranked Tigers to victory at Columbia, Mo., and spoil a 32-point effort by the Spartans’ Ricky Berry.

Missouri converted 11 straight shots from the floor late in the first half and early in the second to improve to 5-2. The Tigers led, 24-23, with 6:51 left in the first half and extended the lead to 59-36 with 13:10 to go in the game.

San Jose State fell to 4-4.

Notre Dame 91, St. Joseph’s, Ind. 70--David Rivers scored 34 points, including nine in a second-half run that gave the Irish the lead for good at South Bend, Ind.

Tied, 44-44, at halftime, St. Joseph’s held a 52-48 lead when the Irish launched a 21-4 spurt to go up 69-56 on Rivers’ 8-footer with 9:43 left. Notre Dame is 5-2; St. Joseph’s is 4-4.

Princeton 62, San Francisco 42--Bob Scrabis scored 25 points, including 18 on three-point shots, to lead the Tigers in the opening round of the Connecticut Mutual tournament at Hartford, Conn.
