Edward Kleban, Lyricist for ‘A Chorus Line’

Edward Kleban, 48, who won Tony and Pulitzer Prize honors for his lyrics in “A Chorus Line.” Kleban, a producer for Columbia Records, also won Grammy award nominations for “A Chorus Line,” “Hallelujah, Baby,” “Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris” and “I’m Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road.” Kleban, with composer Marvin Hamlisch, was one of two members of the New York company retained throughout the controversial film adaptation of “A Chorus Line.” Most recently he had been teaching at the BMI-Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop in New York, where he studied in the 1960s. In New York City on Monday of cancer, according to the entertainment trade newspaper Daily Variety.
