Local News in Brief : Ire Over Homeless Shelter

Share

An emergency shelter in Wilmington, set up by the City of Los Angeles to keep homeless people out of the cold, has aroused the ire of homeowners who want the city to put such shelters in fashionable neighborhoods as well.

“It’s OK in my backyard if you also do it in your backyard,” said Peter Mendoza, president of the Wilmington Home Owners. “I guess that’s our concern.”

Despite the complaints, which have been registered with Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores’ office and the city Community Development Department, the shelters at city recreation centers in Wilmington, Venice, Pacoima and Elysian Park, will remain open through Sunday.

John Nakamatsu, a city administrative assistant, said the city activates its cold weather plan when the temperature drops below 40 degrees or when there is a 50% chance of rain and the weather is 50 degrees or below.

The shelters are selected by the Recreation and Parks Department, depending on which communities have the greatest need, he said, adding, “There was no intention of dumping on any community.”
