Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block, who previously acknowledged that he was considering a challenge to Mayor Tom Bradley in 1989, said he has decided against it. Despite encouragement to run, Block said, “I just could not convince myself to go for it. . . . the negatives outweighed the positives.” The sheriff’s decision leaves City Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky as the only major challenger to Bradley, who will be seeking a fifth term. Block intends to seek a third sheriff’s term in 1990.
