An unidentified man who the California Highway Patrol said leveled a rifle at some officers was shot dead about four miles north of Mt. Shasta. CHP spokesman Jack Burniston said the man had been driving a van reported stolen in Klamath Falls, Ore. After a chase, CHP officers surrounded the van and saw a rifle barrel pointing into the air from the driver’s seat. The driver left the vehicle with the rifle still pointed in the air. But when he leveled it at the officers, several shots were traded. A woman in the van was questioned.
